There are so many people that I encounter in this world, both personally and through media, whose souls radiate beauty. I look at people like this and think this person is strong. They are making their imprint on this Earth.  They are intentionally taking up space and making impeccable use of their time. These paintings are an ode to these people, a “Thank you for inspiring me, to be my best self, to push myself forward. “

I also use portraits as a way of self examination and manifestation. I paint self portraits the way I envision myself in my mind. I invert the colors, I emphasize shadows, I flatten and animate my features, and I visually mold myself into the person that I want to be. I have wanted to be strong, independent, and radiant for as long as I can remember. Most of the time, I don’t feel like I am this type of person. I tend to pull away from what I truly desire. I stop short of what I know that I am capable of. I sometimes pause in the face of challenge when in reality, I should be (re)coiling.

Coils are usually just a name for loops or rings. A coil can also refer to a curl or even a braid. Both are used to lay the foundations of various hair styles. Both of which can sometimes take quite a beating. But, just like the people I admire, these coils are strong. Although they may sometimes experience difficulty and reconstruction, they can always bounce back if cared for properly. Just like me.
